Perth Craigslist

I never realised that craigslist has different country and city editions.  There is a craigslist for Perth.   Let’s start using this thing:  A lovely, simple, doesn’t get in your way classified ad thing.

And the online quokka is such a painful thing to use.

I’m posting a bunch of for sale items up on perth craigslist.  — things we are getting rid of before travelling overseas.  I’ll post the list here as well shortly.

Come on down. In this weather Little Creatures is the place to be, and on Wednesday nights it isn’t too busy.

Oh, something to think about — maybe we ought to move meetups to upcoming.org because it is free.  I’ve been funding the meetups for a while, and starting to think we need another funding mechanism.

May 4, 2006

May 4, 2006.  That’s the day we jump on the ‘plane and head for the UK.   We don’t get into the UK and to our chosen place of Brighton until May 16th.  A few days in Hong Kong and a wedding on Ischia (off Napoli) will keep us entertained along the way.

May 4:  less than two months now.  Cor.

So, we are well into getting organised.   We’ve got a massive garage sale coming up, and Lib is off organising us a container and shipping for that we aren’t selling at the garage sale and in the Quokka.
I’m getting work for when we arrive organised, and working on sorting out the loose end here before we go.

So, I’ll announce the garage sale really soon, and probably point to some stuff on ebay as well.

Freak me out there is a lot to do!

Poly the Pollie

The Podcast Network’s big guy Cameron Reilly has swung into action and launched Poly the Pollie — a plan to invite Australian politicians take a public lie detector tests about policy issues.

I’m thinking this is a great idea. And the first Pollie to be invited is our own Alexander Downer. See Cam’s invitation here and watch for updates on the progress of the project here.

I would so love to see this succeed.

slug no more

I fell into a bit of a hole, exercise wise, which I’ve now emerged from. And about time. Need the energy and go-get-em enthusiasm that regular exercise seems to bring me.

So, I was trying to work out just what sort of exercise to go for. I walk lots each week, lots of 20 minute walks to and from the office. Can’t really work up a sweat doing that, though. Not enough.

Swimming? Well maybe. I live across from the beach right now. That won’t be the same in England, though. I need something portable.

So running seems to be it for now. But done gently. I found The Couch to 5k Running Plan on Cool Running and I’ve been gently working my way up to more and more running. Really lovely this morning, that sensation came where I didn’t want to stop running, that feeling where my body feels light and almost airborne while running.

ValuesHacker steaming ahead

A few teething troubles with the ValuesHacker podcast distribution are over now. It just took a little while to settle down our production process and get the proper site up and running on The Podcast Network.

So, if you haven’t listened yet, why not wander over to the ValuesHacker blog and subscribe, or even subscribe using iTunes by clicking here. I guess iTunes is probably the easiest, but there are other options as well on the blog, including just listening to the shop straight off the website, streamed like.
We’ve got another couple of show ready to go up in the next couple of days too. So, there’ll be more soon.

Podcasting is serious good fun. Here’s how to get your own show together.

Presence Labs

On February 14th, I registered a new business name for a new organisation, Presence Labs, to operate under the umbrella of our existing Barking Owl and carry into the UK sometime soon.

Presence Labs is my new business focussed on Internet presences of all kinds, and particularly building tools to enable websites for the read/write web, blogs, RSS, tagging, social software, user generated content and all that stuff we tend to lump together under that (dare I say it) Web 2.0 word. Let’s call it next generation online presence or something.
And, of course, a new business needs a new blog and domain and website:

presencelabs.com

So, step over there for a look, if you please.

LinkedIn Profile on the web

I noticed that the businessy sixdegreesy linkedin.com have opened up a bit, and now allows your public profile to be visible on the web.
I quite like LinkedIn for business to business networking and as a store for my ever-growing ever-changing CV. It makes a CV a lot easier to manage that the traditional word document type.

See my LinkedIn public profile here.

My ValuesHacker podcast launched on TPN

ValuesHacker podcast

My new podcast, The ValuesHacker Show, has just been launched on The Podcast Network (TPN).

On ValuesHacker, Graham Mann and I talk through the big issues in values in our daily lives and talk and laugh our way through a few stories and into a bunch of practical tools to help you align your values, thinking and actions.

The big issues we take on are things like Fear, Lies, National values, and lots more topics yet to be recorded. We are still feeling our way with the podcast, so I guess we’ll get better at it as we roll out a few more episodes.

The plan is we publish a new episode each week, each one about 30-40 minutes. And with each episode, we like to leave you with a bunch of practical tools to work on your values with.

TPN Power to the People

So, please have a listen, and we would love some feedback and comments on the ValuesHacker blog. You can listen to the show on the blog or subscribe there as well.

I hope you enjoy it. We have great fun making it.

Lucky me

Talk about lucky. I’m a bit sore this morning and a little grazed in places. Now that doesn’t sound lucky, but gee I sure got off lightly.

Last night, we had just got home and I was sorting stuff out. I stepped out the back door of our placed and missed my footing on the step and somehow launched myself into space. There are about 5 steps to ground level. So, I’m falling, and my right foot lands in a large glass bowl at one side on the bottom of the stairs. It is sitting on a couple of bricks and is full of water and fairy stuff. That’s Bea’s fairy garden for those that have seen it.

It shatters into a million pieces and I keep falling. I mid-air kind of twisted onto my right side and landed on the bricks under the washing line, grazing my right knee, elbow, and hand. I bumped my head a little too.

So after all of this, I have a little cut on my foot. No glass cuts at all, and a couple of grazes and a few bruises. Man, I am lucky. I could have had a foot full of glass or a broken ankle or who knows what.

Podcast Green Light

Good news on the podcast front! Graham Mann and I have recorded a couple of shows now and should be all set up for distribution on The Podcast Network as of next week.

We’ve called our podcast The Values Hacker Show, and we’ll be doing a weekly podcast talking though the big issues in our world from a values perspective, including a bunch of practical tools to work on your values and understanding of the big issues in the world. Oh, and we try and keep it light and funny as well.

I’ll publish the details here as soon as we get things up and going at the TPN end. Huge props to Graham for being an inspiring co-host and to Cameron over at TPN for making the process of joining TPN so easy and friendly.

In Second Life

After Rich mentioned that Larry Lessig is doing a virtual book signing in Second Life, I signed on last night, download the app and gave it a go.

I haven’t stepped into an online world like this for a long time. I’m way impressed. I can see why people are talking about using Second Life for business meetings and prototyping designs. I bumbled around for a bit, then found a quite incredible dance club and spent much of the evening there dancing away.

Maybe see you in there sometime. In Second Life I’m called Gra Itoku.

Moving to Brighton, UK, in May

After our big travel last year, we came back with a hankering to up and move to Europe for a few years to explore that side of the world. There ar lots of reasons why, but I guess one of the bigs ones is “Because we can”. We are at a time in our lives where moving to the other side of the world is relatively easy, and we are taking the opportunity while it presents itself.

So the plans are solidifying: We leave Perth and arrive in Brighton on the south coast of the UK and set up our home there for at least 2-3 years. And that is all going to happen this coming May.

Why Brighton? Because after talking to lots of people about living in the UK, almost everybody said “You guys ought to live in Brighton.” Lots and lots of people said this to us. So we checked it out. And loved it.

I’ll be writing a bit about our preparations and what we are going to have to look forward to as we get closer to the time.

i’m still meditating

So far so good with the morning meditations. I’ve managed to get to sit and meditate every morning for at least 20 mins for a week now, except for New Years Day, when I was probably still trying to walk home after that party.

Impressions so far: It is much easier to get my breathing and thoughts into the right place, even after only a few days practice. So the real meditation seems to start quicker and there’s less trying to get comfortable. The meditation time passes quickly. It seems to create a lot of space in my mind that carries through the rest of the morning.

Bea woke and came upstairs while I was meditating this morning. Tried to encourage her to sit still and concentrate on her breathing. Didn’t really work. She woke with many questions and ideas in her head and was just busting, as she would say, to talk about them. So this morning’s meditation ended there and we went down for a swim.

Today is a sad day. I’ll explain why in a couple of days.

oh six

There, that’s over with. New Years is gone for another year.

And it was quite a night. A pair of stonking good parties, home at 7am. Friends, fur, firetrucks and tequilla!

’06 is going to be interesting in gravyland.

We are planning to move to the UK in May, settling in Brighton. And you can imagine how that starts to drive everything that happens this year. Boy there’s a lot to plan and organise.

morning meditation

I’ve acidentally fallen into this rather blissful pattern of getting up early, making a cup of tea and then doing a short meditation before starting the day. And that short meditation leaves me in a really calm and peaceful state which lasts well into the day.

Long may this continue. I hope I can stay in this pattern for a while.

My favourite meditations:
