Voluntary Voting?
Um. Who cares if we have voluntary voting or not? Non issue, I reckon.
The only constitutional matter that really needs dealing with is A Republic of Australia. That’s the big issue, not messing with the voting system.

Well I do for one. Voluntary voting leads to
- reduced participation (read: apathy) in the democratic process. People in other countries fight and die for the right to vote, but you can’t tell me that a significant portion of the Australian electorate won’t bother to vote if it’s optional
- skewed results, typically to the right. Voluntary voting leads to disenfranchisement of sections of disadvantaged people, eg people in aged or special care, people without cars
- huge efforts being made by political campaigns just to get punters to the polling stations (eg the Democrats in recent US elections, who knew that their voters found it more difficult to get to the polls). God knows, the parties should be concentrating on policies!
If you want to be complacent and have an apathetic population allow 30% of the electorate ‘elect’ a government that’s even more right wing than the current one, then maybe you should move to the UK or USA…
The current system means that exercising one’s democratic privelege is not just a right, it’s the responsibility that it should be. The so called ‘right to choose’ argument is bollocks - it’s just an abrogation of responsibility.
I think this is an even bigger issue than the IR rollback of rights, and the libs are trying to sneak it under the radar.
The idea of 4 year fixed terms is another question. Bring on the Republic of Australia too, I say, but it will be some time before it’s back on the agenda after little johnnie’s divide-and-conquer sabotage of the last debate.

Yeah. I care about it too. I was just reacting to the afternoon’s radio which seemed to be all about this ‘huge issue’ of voluntry voting as though it were something that HAD TO BE FIXED RIGHT NOW. It would be change to change’s sake.
And I agree that to change this would mean less would vote, and the right might get stronger.
I’d rather let the people have a replublic FIRST and watch them change and grow after that, then take on other things.
