After arriving in Adelaide we were straight out there to the festival after a brief stop at the hotel to dump bags and move in a little. It was a bit of a walk to get to Womadelaide: we didn’t really know where to go.
When we arrived, the Botanical Park was alight with flames. It was just dark and the flames drew us like moths after we go in the gate. They turned out to be wax candles in terracotta pots arranged in spheres and lines, lighting up the darkening park. That distracted us a bit and then we started to get our bearings and seek out the music.
It was a bit confusing at first. There are six separate stages for musical acts, spread out over the park. We started to wander around looking for music.
Highlight of the night was Cat Empire, a Melbourne band famous for that Hello Hello song. They are amazing musicians and are not too serious about it, having a lot of fun serving up songs that go from ska to reggae to latin to scat and back again.
Later on, we sauntered over to the Universal Village, the Adelaide Festival club afterwards, a quite amazing outdoor venue made for the festival. We enjoyed a bit of music, a couple of drinks and a box of noodles before walking back to the hotel for a nice long sleep.
(No photos from Friday night, I’m afraid. I didn’t take the camera with me)
