Misdirected Uproar

Congratulations to ABC Reporter Leigh Sales for putting her finger on the big issue re: Janet Jackson’s alleged “wardrobe malfunction” in the US Superbowl Half-time show:

While the nation’s in uproar over the appearance of Janet Jackson’s breast on TV for two seconds, a study by the National Coalition on Television Violence shows that American children witness 8,000 murders on TV by the time they finish primary school.

  1. Excellent point. I was most taken by the whole media manipulation thing but really, the sex v violence debate is even more critical to be looking at isnt it.

I know what I would prefer my (our!) 3 year old to be looking at… breasts not bombs!

Then again, the exploitation of women’s bodies and identities must also be considered…

Ahhh censorship… always a loaded topic.

  2. You can see my thoughts on the subject at my blog:

The “sex vs violence” debate is a fun one, especially in the computer-games arena. Most parents would have a fit if their children were playing computer games where you run around taking peoples clothes off, but running around and blowing them to bits is perfectly acceptable…
