Save Moore River
We yet another big coastal development sprawl proposed on our beautiful coastline.
SaveMooreRiver.org is a community group aiming to limit the scope of this development:
The Moore River empties into the Indian Ocean at Guilderton. Guilderton, a very small town (permanent population around 150) is built on the North bank of this pristine river system. Although the town is small, The Moore River area is enjoyed by tens of thousands of holiday makers every year. Moore River is a beautiful, unspoilt wilderness that is only an hour’s drive from Perth.
The Developer has plans to turn this area into more urban sprawl with a development consisting of around 7000 houses on the tongue of land between the River and sea on the South side of the Moore River.
It is a pity that our communities, with only their own resources, have to fight to control rampant developments. Where is the government support for the community groups?
Anyway, these folk need your support. Have a look at the website to see how you can help.

If you haven’t been to Guilderton, then get up there and have a look! Camp in the caravan park, hire a house or go for a day trip. You cannot imagine wilderness like this so close to Perth (about an hour’s drive).
The Friends of Moore River Estuary oppose the destruction of the natural environment on the South side of the river. The group is fighting the development on a number of fronts.
FOMRE want the EPA to do an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the proposed subdivision. It is quite bizarre that the EPA decided not to do an EIA on the area. The then Chair of the EPA, Dr Steedman, suggests his decision may have been in error:
“… But I have to say that looking back and hearing all this additional information; with the wisdom of hindsight one might have taken a different view. If I had all this information now I probably would have gone the other way” (Dr Steedman Chairman EPA, The West Australian 5/2/1996, page 3)
The trouble is that once the EPA have said no, it is hard to reverse that decision. One of the groups immediate objectives is to halt any development applications until the EPA do what they should have done ten years ago. We are lobbying the EPA directly as well as our State politicians. There is petition and a form letter on the save moore river site.
Developer is called ‘The Moore River Company’. It sounds like a grassroots organisation. However, the owners of The Moore River Company are WA’s Plunkett family (see Stateline story@: http://www.abc.net.au/stateline/wa/content/2003/s936208.htm ). The Moore River Company has backers with a century of experience in building and developing in Western Australia and is expert in countering opposition. They have enormous resources. The campaign to protect the Moore River is now ten years old and reaching a critical stage as the Developer has applied for planning approval. Next step…. Another Joondalup?
Go to Guilderton, take the kids and hire a canoe. An hour’s drive and a ten minute canoe trip from Perth and you are in complete wilderness. You can’t beat it! Although, it might not be there for long.
